Reported From Thursday, Oct. 3

A masked gunman broke into a rabbi's Southfield home Wednesday night while he was hosting a Rosha Hashana dinner for University of Michigan students, the Detroit News reports.

The man stole a bag and left, and no one was hurt, the News reported, citing UM President Santa Ono. Rosha Hashana marks the start of the Jewish New Year. It began Wednesday night and ends Friday.

"The suspect was armed with a handgun and stated, 'I’m taking everything, give me everything,'" read a news release from the Southfield Police Department.

"The preliminary investigation indicates this was a crime of opportunity. However, the investigation is ongoing."

The rabbi is affiliated with the Jewish Resource Center in Ann Arbor that serves UM students.

"No one was injured and law enforcement officials with the Southfield Police Department are investigating this as a home invasion and a crime of opportunity," Ono wrote in a community statement. "The Division of Public Safety and Security has increased security and patrols around campus and neighboring areas. Meanwhile, each of us can do our part to show one another the kindness and respect that so many of us need right now."

The News reports that Southfield police responded to a call of a home invasion around 10:39 p.m.

The publication wrote:

Officers searched the home, but the suspect, a Black man in his late teens or early 20s, had already left, according to police. Investigators believe the suspect entered the home through the back door with a handgun and stated "I'm taking everything, give me everything," according to the release.
