A Detroit Police officer on Tuesday night fatally shot a parole violator in a shootout on the city's east side near a park where children were playing football, WXYZ reports.
The shooting happened on Chandler Park Drive and Radnor Street around 7 p.m.
WXYZ reports that officers were patrolling the area when they spotted a man they knew "from a previous narcotics deal," Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald said.
Officers ran his name in the law enforcement system and discovered he had a parole violation.
Police said the officers parked their car, and approached the man, who pulled out a gun from his waistband and fired at an officer. The officer returned fire and the man died at the scene, WXYZ reports.
