An off-duty, 13-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department, was fatally shot Monday afternoon by a fellow officer after he opened fire, Fox 2 reports. The officer had been threatening suicide.
Police Chief James White said the officer was 'asking for suicide by cop," meaning he set himself up to be killed by officers as a form of suicide. Two of the officers who responded to the scene were shot and wounded.
The dead officer was 45, a sergeant and member of the Special Response Team. He was also trained as a sniper.
White said police from the 11th Precinct responded to a 911 call on St. Aubin around 2:30 p.m. Whey they arrived, they took cover behind a vehicle after hearing gunshots.
One officer was shot in the thigh and another in the leg.
One of the officers returned fire, killing the shooter, White said.
