There have been 49 governors since Michigan became a state in 1837. None have been Black.

Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II wants to change that.

Officially announcing his candidacy for governor on Tuesday, the Democrat hopes to become the first Black governor. He also aims to be the first lieutenant governor to win the governor’s race in more than 40 years.

"I’m running for governor," Gilchrist posted on X Tuesday. "As an engineer, I solve problems and deliver results—that’s what we’ve done for six years.

"Now, we face new challenges. We need bold leadership to protect our rights and build health and wealth for every Michigander."

His boss, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, has chosen not to endorse anyone in the primary, where Gilchrist is expected to face a tough challenge.

At this point, Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is considered a favorite in the primary. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson is also running.

Both Swanson and Gilchrist face uphill battles.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running as an Independent.
