Former University of Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matthew Weiss of Ann Arbor faces charges in a 24-count federal indictment for allegedly gaining unauthorized access to student-athlete databases at more than 100 colleges and universities and downloading intimate photos and videos.

Specifically, between 2015 and 2023, the indictment alleges that Weiss illegally hacked into social media, email, and cloud storage accounts of more than 3,300 individuals, many of whom were female college athletes.

Of those 3,300 individuals, approximately 2,000 were targeted athletes. Additionally, he allegedly accessed the personal information of another 1,300 students and alumni from universities across the country.

Once Weiss obtained access to these accounts, the indictment alleges he downloaded personal and intimate digital photographs and videos that were never intended to be shared beyond intimate partners.

The indictment states that Weiss kept notes on individuals in these images and commented on their bodies and sexual preferences.

The information he accessed was maintained by a third-party vendor, Keffer Development Services. Weiss, now 42, was fired by the university in January 2023 after the allegations first surfaced.

“Our office will move aggressively to prosecute computer hacking to protect the private accounts of our citizens,” Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck said in a statement. “We stand ready, with our law enforcement partners, to bring those who illegally invade the privacy of others to justice.”
