Jamiel Altaheri, who resigned under pressure in October as Hamtramck police chief, is considering an offer to work for New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s administration, Fox 2 reports.

Altaheri tells Fox 2 that the Mamdani administration has made an offer but declined to provide details. Before coming to Hamtramck, he worked as the commanding officer of the NYPD's Office of Equity and Inclusion.

In February 2024, the Yemeni American became Hamtramck's first Arab and Muslim police chief. Mamdani is New York's first Muslim mayor.

But in 2025, Altaheri and other city officials came under investigation for allegations of misconduct and were suspended.

An independent report by a law firm alleged that he destroyed evidence by wiping his city phone, drove his city vehicle while intoxicated to and from a strip club, and pressured his officers to falsify a police report to help him in a custody dispute with the mother of his 2-year-old son.

The city council directed the acting city manager to fire Altaheri, but his lawyer argued that the city charter didn't allow the council to do that.

Consequently, he resigned with a five-month severance package.

Amir Makled, his attorney, told the Detroit Free Press in October that the agreement allows Altaheri to leave with integrity and preserve his reputation.
