Man Who Slammed Car Into Detroit Metro Airport Ordered Into Mental Health Program

The man who rammed his car into the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport on Jan. 23 hasn’t been charged criminally but has been ordered by a Macomb County probate judge into a 180-day mental health treatment program, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Freep reporters John Wisely and Andrea May Sahouri, citing Probate Court records, report that 60 of those days could be in a treatment facility.

Records show the 37-year-old Chesterfield Township resident was treated at Corewell Health Taylor Hospital, where a social worker filed a petition asking a court to hospitalize him. The Freep has not published his name because he has not been criminally charged.

"He made statements that he should have died in the crash," the social worker wrote, according to the Freep. "He states he's been awake for 10 days with no sleep. He's been observed talking to himself."

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office on Thursday said it received a warrant request in the case that it needs to review to decide whether to file charges.
