M.L. Elrick Reports That Newly Appointed Wayne County Juvenile Referee Has Shady Record

Attorney Daniel Mercier, who, in 2024, finished last in the race for Wayne County Probate Court judge, was hired earlier this month as a juvenile court referee — a job that pays between $102,000 and $140,000 a year. His job is to hear cases and make recommendations.

But the problem, according to Detroit Free Press investigative columnist M.L. Elrick, is that Mercier has a pretty shady past, writing: "The man once considered such a liar that he wasn't fit to be a lawyer nevertheless is sitting in judgment over them."

Elrick reports:

►Three women accused Mercier of beating them.

►Two states found him unfit to be a lawyer; after one of the states finally gave him a law license, he was disbarred but persuaded officials to instead suspend his law license for three years.

►He was charged with driving away from an accident, but cut a deal and copped to careless driving.

►He was sued for unpaid bills, and the state of Michigan twice put liens on his properties for unpaid income taxes.

►He is defending himself in a lawsuit accusing him of committing malpractice by allegedly leaving a client hanging.

Chief Wayne County Circuit Judge Edward Ewell Jr., who signed Mercier's appointment, did not respond to Elrick for comment.
